The Velvet Oak takes a natural approach to create heirloom imagery for individuals and families during their Beach Photography Session. We love to photograph you in genuine, meaningful settings that convey the essence of who you are and what you love. Planning your Beach Photography with The Velvet Oak

If this is your family’s first time working with a professional photographer, it can be challenging to know what to expect. What should I bring? Will there be enough time to get the perfect picture? Will my child feel uncomfortable in front of the camera? We completely understand these feelings of concern; you are not alone! We’re here to work for and with you to make your session as stress-free as possible. Remember, this is supposed to be fun! Our working method is simple: We tailor our photography to you and your family. Each session is a unique experience, built from the ground up just for you. In our initial consultation, we’ll discuss things like the family schedule, favorite locations, and attention spans to make your photo day a smashing success. This is your day to relax and enjoy your family; We’ll do the rest!

Planning is the key to success! If your family or child has a daily routine, it’s best to schedule the photo session in a way that works with, not against, this routine. For example, if your child has a certain naptime, we’ll plan the shoot to be either before or after they wake up to prevent tantrums and fatigue. On the other hand, if your baby generally sleeps during the afternoon, a morning session may be best. We’re here to make your session a success and work with you individually to find a time and place that fits the family!

Scheduling Your Beach Photography Portrait Session

When scheduling an outdoor portrait session, you may notice that we recommend shooting during an exact time of day-generally the last sixty to ninety minutes before the sun has completely set. This particular window is, known to photographers as “The Golden Hour” is the period when the light from the sun is at its most perfect. With its long rays diffused across the sky, the light creates a flattering glow and shimmer for picture-perfect skin tones and deliciously warm portraits. We also recommend morning sessions. Early morning sessions provide a more ethereal feel to photographs that we love.

If we’ve chosen an outdoor location for your photos, we will most likely be at the mercy of the weather! If the day turns out to be extremely hot, which can be dangerous and frustrating for the family, we’ll find an alternate date for the photos. Similarly, for rainstorms, snow, or extreme cold, We’d instead reschedule than push everyone into an uncomfortable place! We will be in communication the day before and the day of the session to discuss any challenges that may arise and deal with them in the most convenient way possible for your family.

Having pictures done at the beach can be a lot of fun. Beach pictures are best done either early morning, right before sunrise, or afternoon right before sunset. Remember to wear sunscreen during your session since there will be no shade. We would leave shoes at home and go barefoot or wear flip-flops. We would also recommend bringing a change of clothes if you plan to go in the water – even if only ankle deep. Bring a towel to wipe off sand after the session. As far as what to wear – light colors work best. Flowy dresses are pretty for the ladies. We suggest that guys roll up their pants at the ankles to give it a more beachy vibe. Girls note that it will probably be windy since we are by the ocean. It will be a bit chillier in the morning.
