Engagement Photography

Your engagement is an exciting time, and it’s a milestone that you’re going to want to remember. Your engagement photography session is the perfect way to start getting comfortable in front of the camera and get a feel for what it will be like to work with your photographer on the day of your wedding.

Preparing for Your Engagement Photography Session

If you’ve recently scheduled your engagement photography shoot, here are a couple of tips that will help you prepare.

Keep It Simple. When choosing a theme for your engagement session, try not to overthink it. Start by making a list of the things you like to do together. It can honestly be something as simple as reading books in bed on a Sunday. Then, by giving your photographer a picture of who you are as a couple, they will be able to help you come up with some ideas. Sometimes the simplest ideas make for the best photos.

Your Clothing Should Be Comfortable. Obviously, you want to look nice, but this doesn’t mean you need to wear something fancy for your shoot. Consider the location of your engagement session – what clothing would make sense in that setting? Your clothing should also reflect who you are as a couple, or your photos could end up looking unnatural. Nothing is stopping you from getting the best of both worlds, though. Bring along a change of clothing if you would like to get a few glamorous shots too. If you are using your photos in your save-the-dates or your décor, make sure that your outfits match the theme of your wedding.

Take Full Advantage of Your Location. Instead of planning several different props for your shoot, consider what you’ll already have available to you based on your location. For example, if you’ve chosen an outdoor location, consider all the backdrops you’ll be able to use and decide whether you need anything extra to bring your photos to life. There may be some details at the location that will provide you with all you need.

It’s Ok to Say No. As you prepare for your engagement session, your photographer will make suggestions – don’t feel obligated to use these suggestions! This is your photo session, and you can say no if a specific idea doesn’t appeal to you.

Find Some Inspiration. In the weeks leading up to your session, head to Pinterest, Instagram, and Google to find some inspiration for your shoot. You will very quickly discover what styles you like and dislike, which will make it easier for you to tell your photographer what you want.
